The Institute for the Study and Research of the Medieval World was established with the aim of promoting systematic research into the history, culture, and social structures of the medieval period. Its creation reflects the growing academic interest in a deeper understanding of the historical processes that shaped Europe and the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages.

The founding of the Institute took place within the framework of developing research structures at the University of Crete, aiming to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration among historians, philologists, archaeologists, and other scholars of the medieval world. Through this cooperation, a dynamic research environment is created that fosters the exchange of knowledge and the development of new scientific approaches.

Since its inception, the Institute has set the study of primary historical sources, manuscripts, and archival material of the medieval period as a core priority. Philological analysis, historical interpretation, and the utilization of modern research methods contribute to the understanding of the political, social, and cultural developments of the era.

At the same time, the Institute seeks to develop international collaborations with research centers and universities dedicated to Medieval Studies. Through academic conferences, research programs, and publications, the Institute actively contributes to the advancement of the study of the medieval world and the dissemination of scientific knowledge on an international level.
