Professor Christos Lionis, MD, PhD, FRCGP(Hon), FESC, FWONCA, is a physician and internationally distinguished leader in primary care and public health. He served as Professor of General Practice and Primary Health Care at the University of Crete from 1995 to 2022 and was appointed Professor Emeritus in 2023. He also operates as Co-Head of the newly established WHO Collaborating Center at the School of Medicine, University of Crete. In addition, Professor Lionis is member of the Scientific Committee of the Institute for Research in Education and Digital Humanities and Social Sciences. He is also serving as Professor of Primary Care and Public Health at the University of Limassol in Cyprus. Throughout his career, he has led and contributed to numerous European and international research initiatives focused on strengthening primary health care systems, improving quality of care, and advancing medical education. Professor Lionis has played a prominent role in international academic and professional networks, including WONCA’s work in mental health and interdisciplinary primary care. His many distinctions include honorary fellowships and recognitions from major international medical organizations, including the Royal College of General Practitioners, WONCA, and the European Society of Cardiology. With 493 PubMed-indexed publications, an h-index of 74, and 52,786 citations on Google Scholar as of July, 1st 2026, Professor Lionis has made a lasting contribution to health policy, research, clinical practice, and medical education in Greece and worldwide.
