Dr. Papadakis is a Senior Research Associate, School of Medicine at the University of Crete (Greece). Dr. Papadakis holds a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Public Health & Health Systems at the University of Waterloo and a Master’s in Health Administration. Sophia divides her time between Crete and the UK where she is Academic and Health Systems Consultant for the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT). Prior to relocating to Europe she was Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa and Programme Director, in the Division of Prevention of Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Papadakis main area of interest is health behaviour change and with a focus on tobacco dependence treatment. She holds expertise in the design, delivery and evaluation of complex interventions in health care and community settings. She has a particular interest in implementation science with a focus on methodology to support the scale-up of evidence-based interventions. Dr. Papadakis has held multiple large research and knowledge translation grants and has been member of several European Research Consortiums. Dr. Papadakis has been involved as author of national guidance and regularly delivers training to health and social care professionals in health behaviour change and tobacco dependence treatment. She has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and monographs. She is lead author of the English National Stop Smoking Guidance (2024) and was awarded the European Network for Smoking Prevention ENSP Award for Excellence for significant contribution to the field of tobacco control in (2025).
